SUMMARY:Art of Time Ensemble | Sankofa: The Soldier's Tale
DESCRIPTION:Sankofa: The Soldier’s Tale Retold reimagines Igor Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat in a new libretto by poet Titilope Sonuga. Through the journey of a fictional soldier attempting to enlist in WWI\, this Soldier’s Tale is set against the historical context of the No. 2 Construction Battalion — the only Canadian battalion composed of Black soldiers to serve in the First World War. \nIn a psychological battle with the devil on the road to enlisting\, the soldier embodies the battalion’s resilience and enduring struggle against racism\, discrimination and historical erasure. Like the symbol of the Sankofa bird from which this story draws its name (a word in the Twi language of Ghana which means to go back and retrieve what was forgotten)\, this work blends past and future as the rhythm of Sonuga’s poetry weaves through Stravinsky’s original music. Sankofa is an invitation to honour a difficult history while moving toward a more promising future. \nCast:\nDiego Matamoros\, Devil\nWade Bogert-O’Brien\, Devil understudy\nOlaoluwa Fayokun\, Soldier\nOrdena Stephens-Thompson\, Narrator

SUMMARY:Opera Atelier | Handel’s Acis and Galatea
DESCRIPTION:Handel’s Acis and Galatea is one of the composer’s most beloved and successful operas. \nThe story of the water nymph Galatea and her love for the Arcadian shepherd Acis comes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses and is full of all of the sensuality and humour we associate with 18th century storytelling at its very best. \nOpera Atelier is revisiting Acis and Galatea for the first time since 2010 with their 2024 production\, and will be showcasing two notable company debuts: French tenors Antonin Rondepierre as Acis and Blaise Rantoanina as Damon. The role of Galatea will be portrayed by Opera Atelier audience favourite soprano\, Meghan Lindsay\, who makes her role debut\, with bass baritone Douglas Williams singing the role of the lovesick cyclops\, Polyphemus. The production will also feature new choreography by Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg\, performed by the full corps of the Artists of Atelier Ballet. \nSung in English and featuring some of Handel’s most ravishing music for singing and dancing\, Acis and Galatea is the perfect introduction to opera and ballet for the entire family.
