SUMMARY:The National Ballet of Canada | Don Quixote
DESCRIPTION:Follow the eccentric Don Quixote and his sidekick Sancho Panza on a quest for love in the North American premiere of Carlos Acosta’s Don Quixote\, created for The Royal Ballet and remounted for Birmingham Royal Ballet in 2022. Cuban-born Carlos Acosta was one of the great male dancers of his era and Basilio\, the young lover from Don Quixote\, was a signature role. Don Quixote is a comic romance in the sunny landscape of Spain\, set to a musical arrangement of Ludwig Minkus’ score by Hans Vercauteren\, featuring original music for guitar.

SUMMARY:Tafelmusik | A Handel Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Our 45th-anniversary season culminates with A Handel Celebration\, a salute to one of the greatest musical dramatists of all time. \nA true humanist\, Handel responded to the beauty and chaos of the world around him\, creating music that explores the full spectrum of our emotional experience—from the purest joy to the most poignant sorrow. \nGuest soloists Amanda Forsythe\, soprano\, and Thomas Hobbs\, tenor\, join the choir and orchestra directed by Ivars Taurins\, who has chosen some of his favourite arias\, duets\, and choruses from Handel’s oratorios\, including Solomon\, Hercules\, Semele\, and Judas Maccabeus. Together they weave a gorgeous tapestry that wraps up our milestone season. \nA Handel Celebration will be recorded live for future release on the Tafelmusik Media label. \nDirected by Ivars Taurins

SUMMARY:Toronto Symphony Orchestra | James Ehnes + An American in Paris
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed French conductor Stéphane Denève leads a program teeming with the vivacity\, imagination\, and romance synonymous with his homeland. A spirited and tuneful ballet suite by Francis Poulenc and a journey through a supernatural dream city by Guillaume Connesson paint colourful sonic pictures rich in melody and texture. George Gershwin’s An American in Paris is a Jazz Age travelogue that continues to electrify the senses with its joie de vivre. And Toronto Symphony Orchestra Spotlight Artist James Ehnes returns for his second appearance of the season with Serenade\, one of Leonard Bernstein’s most lyrical orchestral works—a musical interpretation of the Greek philosopher Plato’s dialogue on the multi-faceted forms love can take. \nThere’s a free pre-concert performance by the TSO Chamber Soloists before the Thursday\, May 30 performance. See the TSO Chamber Soloists page for more information.
