SUMMARY:Hugh's Room | French Squeeze
DESCRIPTION:Mezzo  soprano\, Marjorie Maltais and tenor\, Jacques Arsenault\, who also plays the accordion\, make up French Squeeze. \nMarjorie Maltais grew up in the Charlevoix region of Quebec\, and began playing piano at 10 years old. She joined a choir 2 years later and studied organ\, but came back to voice \, and studied at Western University\, graduating with a Master Degree in Voice in 2015. Her classical singing career has\, to date brought her to stages across Canada\, to New York and beyond\, singing in both opera (Carmen) and also works such as Messiah\, with orchestra and choir. \nJacques Arsenault’s family dates back to 1720 with proud Acadian roots in Prince Edward Island. He first began learning to play the accordion\, after receiving an instrument on his 5th birthday. He also loved to sing in musical theatre productions and\, after high school\, he spent a year at a Conservatory in Paris and first heard the music of Jacques Brel \, Charles Trenet and more. Later Jacques studied organ and classical voice at the University of Prince Edward Island and received his Masters in Voice at the University of Alberta. \nThe pair met via their mutual agent\, who suggsted they’d be great together. The caveat for song choices is\, they have to love it. Their songs run the gamut from Poulenc to Kurt Weill to Saint Sãens to Edith Piaf and all points between! \nMusical arrangements are by Jacques Arsenault. \nNote: 296 Broadview Avenue is not yet a fully wheelchair accessible venue\, with stairs between all levels. Our goal is to fix that\, and we need your support to do so – please consider making a donation towards our goals of making Hugh’s Room the best listening room in Toronto!
