SUMMARY:The Royal Conservatory of Music | ARC Ensemble: Celebrating 20 Years
DESCRIPTION:The ARC Ensemble celebrates its 20th anniversary with Walter Braunfels’s ravishing String Quintet\, one of ARC’s early discoveries. The program also features the lush Romantic works of Frederick Block\, whose thriving career was cut short in 1938 when he fled Vienna and moved to New York. Block’s music has not been heard in over 75 years. ARC’s Artistic Director\, Simon Wynberg\, will introduce these two extraordinary composers and a reception in celebration of ARC’s 20th anniversary will follow the concert. \nComprised of the senior faculty of The Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School\, with special guests drawn from the organization’s most accomplished students and alumni\, the three-time Grammy Award nominated ARC Ensemble is among Canada’s most distinguished cultural ambassadors. Performing a wide range of music\, its focus remains the research and recovery of works that were suppressed and marginalized under the 20th century’s repressive regimes. A growing number of previously unknown masterworks are rejoining the repertoire as a result of the ARC Ensemble’s work.

SUMMARY:Toronto Symphony Orchestra | Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Tchaikovsky’s delight for his original ballet score for The Sleeping Beauty\, and his desire to adapt it into an orchestral suite\, languished due to the monumental task of editing down the volume of enchanting numbers. It was not published in suite form until after his death. Your Toronto Symphony Orchestra performs the beloved suite as compiled by guest conductor Maxim Emelyanchev\, revered for its dramatic fantasy\, colourful orchestration\, and enduring charm. A second fantasy plays across the stage with the prelude to Humperdinck’s fairy-tale opera\, Hansel and Gretel. The charming score\, adapted from the Brothers Grimm story\, is brought to life in the leitmotifs of the characters\, from the lilting innocence of the children to the dissonant chords of the evil witch. Also on the program\, Toronto Symphony Orchestra Principal Bassoon Michael Sweeney performs the hauntingly beautiful Bassoon Concerto by Italian-Canadian composer Marjan Mozetich. In 2003\, Sweeney commissioned and premièred the intriguing soundscape\, which merges new concepts with the familiar. \nThere’s a free pre-concert performance by the TSO Chamber Soloists before the Sunday\, December 3 performance. See the TSO Chamber Soloists page for more information.
