SUMMARY:Ottawa Chamberfest | Parting Wild Horse’s Mane: Ironwood Quartet with Tai Chi forms
DESCRIPTION:Chamberfest is excited to present this unique\, multi-disciplined\, all-Canadian event. Combining martial arts with music\, prize-winning Tai Chi Chuan players Jonathan Krehm\, David Robert\, and Evonne Tan join Ottawa’s Ironwood Quartet in an ode to both the Chinese martial art\, and to Canadian artistry. The Ottawa premiere of works by Evan Mitchell\, Kevin Lau\, and Alexina Louie\, alongside a performance of Parting Wild Horse’s Mane by one of Canada’s most widely-known composers\, R. Murray Schafer\, frames Tai Chi Chuan demonstrations of forms and weapons in this mesmerizing performance. \n“Having performed this Schafer quartet as a Tai Chi Chuan player\,” Jonathan Krehm writes\, “I was inspired to commission the other music in this program. Combining the two arts that are the main inspirations in my life was a unique opportunity. I wanted to showcase the energy and elegance of the powerful martial art I have studied for 45 years with the drama it inspired in these composers. Accompanying these forms with art music written by Canadians is a multicultural exercise that is what I like best about what Canada has become: a place that welcomes and honours different cultures\, a place where they thrive.”

SUMMARY:Festival of the Sound | The Spirit Horse Returns
DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, James Campbell introduced Jodi Contin to Ken MacDonald and invited them to visit ten Parry Sound schools for the Festival’s “Music Scores” program. He confidently made an unlikely pairing of the Indigenous hand drum with the French horn\, trusting them to” make it work.” They developed a short presentation about an Ojibwe Horse at Ken’s farm named Asemaa’kwe and the so-called “Indian Ponies” that were once numerous around Wasauksing and other First Nations as helpersand spirit animals. Jodi and Ken told this story at the 2019 Gchi Dewin Indigenous Storyteller’s Festival\, incorporating artwork by Anishinaabe artist and breed expert Rhonda Snow. Encouraged by the response\, Jodi\, Ken\, and Rhonda invited composers Kevin Lau and Andrew Balfour on board to create a production for full orchestra entitled “The Spirit Horse Returns.” The Festival of the Sound hosted the group to workshop the piece in the summer of 2021. They brought a pair of Ojibwe Horses to an encampment outside the Stockey Centre. The emotional response felt by many of the elders on Wasauksing when the horses appeared there for the first time in fifty years ago was profound. The work was premiered by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in 2022 and has been greeted enthusiastically by audiences of the Hamilton Philharmonic\, the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra\, the Kitchener- Waterloo Symphony\, the Stratford Symphony\, and will be by the National Arts Centre Orchestra and others. Today’s performance features a re-orchestration by Kevin Lau for the Sounding Thunder instrumental ensemble. “The Spirit Horse Returns” resonates with audiences of all ages with its combination of gentle humour\, adventure\, and a narrative about the power of reconciliation when we care for the land and each other.

SUMMARY:Ottawa Chamberfest | Anna Ludlow & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Ottawa fiddler Anna Ludlow hails from Antigonish\, Nova Scotia\, and has been rocking the Canadian Celtic and folk scene for the past 2 decades. Known for her dynamic performances\, she is a multi-instrumentalist\, vocalist\, and songwriter who captivates audiences\, giving listeners a modern taste of Celtic history and culture in what Ludlow calls “a true kitchen party experience.” She’s a musician for whom rhythm matters deeply: “I really want to drive the beat\, a lively beat.” Above all\, she wants to engage her audience. “I always get people up to dance.” For her performance at La Nouvelle Scène Gilles Desjardins\, Ludlow will be accompanied by Ottawa pianist Tyson Chen\, Graham Lindsey (guitar)\, and dancers ___________ \nLudlow started performing as a pre-teen and opened for the Beach Boys when she was 19. After collaborating with some of Canada’s most renowned artists\, Ludlow became the principal fiddler for the Juno-nominated\, critically acclaimed\, international touring production DRUM!\, and in 2018 she became the inaugural fiddle player for the Tony award-winning hit show Come From Away. Outside of theatre work\, Ludlow is influenced by her working-class Celtic ancestry and fuses the traditional Cape Breton music of the Scottish Gàidhealtachd (the Highlands and Islands of Scotland) with a modern percussive vibe. With over 8 multi-award nominations\, multiple performances on The Marilyn Denis Show\, and a feature on Bell Fibe TV\, you won’t want to miss this local favourite. You can also find Ludlow touring and recording with multiple bands across Canada.
