SUMMARY:Ottawa Chamberfest | J.S. Bach’s Long Walk in the Snow: Tom Allen & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Chamberfest welcomes CBC’s Tom Allen and friends to the stage for “JS Bach’s Long Walk in the Snow\,” a narrated performance accompanied by music. About the show\, Allan writes that it “…is a coming-of-age-story about a hot-headed\, small-town orphan who narrowly avoided committing murder\, turned his back on a perfectly good job and walked 400 kilometres north to find love\, fulfilment\, and the father figure he didn’t know he needed.” The 20-year old’s trek to the sophisticated port city of Lubeck was a four-month odyssey\, a memorable coming-of-age trip that musical storyteller Tom Allen takes you along for a tale of sword fights\, big business\, and a glittering Christmas romance. Enjoy the journey with the brilliant musicianship of harpist Lori Gemmell\, violinist Mark Fewer\, bassist and gambist Joe Phillips\, and virtuoso vocalist Suba Sankaran.

SUMMARY:Ottawa Chamberfest | New Music Now: Throwbacks
DESCRIPTION:Surprisingly\, the phrase “New Music” was first introduced in the early 1930s by Viennese composers Arnold Schonberg and Anton Webern\, but we have always been delighted – and sometimes challenged – by new developments in art music. In this concert\, you’ll hear various works from this seminal period in the history of “new music\,” centred around the rarely-heard and perhaps oddly-scored Suite\, Op. 29 by Arnold Schoenberg\, written for 3 clarinets\, violin\, viola\, cello\, and piano.

SUMMARY:Toronto Summer Music | Darkness and Light
DESCRIPTION:New Orford String Quartet\nJonathan Crow\, violin\nAndrew Wan\, violin\nSharon Wei\, viola\nBrian Manker\, cello \nKelly-Marie Murphy: Oblique Light\nBartók: String Quartet No. 4 in C Major\, BB 95\, Sz. 91\nSchubert: String Quartet No. 15 in G Major\, op. 161\, D. 887 \nAttention string quartet lovers and musical thrill seekers: this concert is for you! The New Orford String Quartet\, called “string virtuosos [who] animate every note with uncommon power and passion as well as elegance\,” (Toronto Star) return as TSM fan favourites. This glorious string quartet by Schubert was his final exploration of this medium\, cast on a grand scale and displaying all the warmth and wisdom he had accumulated up to that point in his tragically brief career. The fourth of Hungarian master Béla Bartók’s Six String Quartets (1928) is an arresting and truly dynamic work. Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy is represented by her vibrant string quartet Oblique Light\, a reflection on\, to quote the composer\, “How we experience light in a northern climate.” \nThis concert is presented in honour of the late Andrew Dawes.

SUMMARY:Ottawa Chamberfest | Nonlinear: Steve Boudreau & Peter Hum
DESCRIPTION:Chamberfest is proud to present the launch of Nonlinear\, a duo debut album of original compositions by two of Ottawa’s favourite jazz pianists! Join Steve Boudreau and Peter Hum at La Nouvelle Scène Gilles Desjardins as they play a program focused on their joint efforts. Thanks to a grant from the City of Ottawa\, Boudreau and Hum took to the studio last fall and the final product\, Nonlinear\, will be launched at Chamberfest. Expect their performance to showcase a distinctive and highly interactive approach to playing lyrical and dynamic music rich in improvisation. \nKnown in Ottawa for his work as a local journalist\, Hum was bitten as a teen by the jazz bug in the form of music by Keith Jarrett\, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. Hum has performed with many Canadian jazz legends and featured others in his own projects. Steve Boudreau is also an Ottawa-based pianist who specialises in jazz and popular music. A teacher for over 20 years\, Boudreau has toured the United States and Canada extensively and performed as both leader and sideman at various jazz festivals. Hum and Boudreau are prolific collaborators. Both are guests on many albums and have released recordings of their own compositions; Boudreau’s latest trio album\, Cherished Possessions\, is receiving praise and radio play around the world.
