SUMMARY:Ottawa Chamberfest | Introducing Ensemble Obiora
DESCRIPTION:Chamberfest is proud to present Ensemble Obiora\, Canada’s first ensemble with a mission to increase the representation of culturally diverse musicians in the classical music scene\, and to perform works by composers of colour whose contributions have gone unnoticed. Based in Montreal with members from across the country (including Ottawa area violinist Renee London and pianist John Kofi Dapaah)\, the group was founded in 2021 on the principles of “Diversity\, Discovery\, and Dissemination” by double bassist Brandyn Lewis and his partner Allison Migeon. The project was named in honour of a concept from Lewis and Migeon’s shared heritage: in Igbo\, a language spoken in Nigeria\, Obiora means “heart of the people.” As the ensemble’s roster has grown to include more than 50 musicians\, the two say it feels like one big family\, filled with people they stay close to outside of performances. \nFor their Chamberfest debut\, Ensemble Obiora’s programme features Startin’ Sumthin’\, a funky reimagining of ragtime music scored for woodwind quintet by African-American composer Jeff Scott. Rounding out the program are compositions by Anglo-African composer and conductor Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Joseph Bologne\, Chevalier de Saint-Georges\, who was born on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe to an enslaved woman of Senegalese origin and a French plantation owner – the earliest European musician/composer of African descent to receive widespread critical acclaim. The ensemble invites you to join them in Woodside Hall after the concert for a discussion on the repertoire\, the ensemble\, and its mission.

SUMMARY:Ottawa Chamberfest | Josh “Socalled” Dolgin Sings Yiddish\, with Warhol Dervish
DESCRIPTION:Josh “Socalled” Dolgin\, “the mad wizard of Yiddish Hip-Hop”\, digs into his roots with this heart breaking\, trailblazing show\, Socalled sings Yiddish. Joined by the string quartet Warhol Dervish\, Socalled will present songs from the Yiddish Theatre\, Hasidic melodies\, Klezmer\, folksong\, the Holocaust\, Israel\, and some new originals. \nSays Socalled: “Through song\, so much history and culture can be exposed and given new life. The quartet arrangements give the music the harmonic respect it deserves… The program is funny\, sad\, beautiful\, and dark with a diverse range of styles\, colours\, keys\, modes and moods. Let’s dig deep\, celebrate\, and explore the riches of this extraordinary culture.” \nAccompanied by Warhol Dervish\, an “unorthodox chamber music collective” who seek to blur the lines separating classical music from other styles through collaboration\, this made-in-Montreal partnership is sure to bring out the best in both Dolgin and the Warhol Dervishes. Club SAW’s laid-back atmosphere makes the perfect backdrop for a “marriage of voice in performance with quartet arrangements [that] is so profoundly affecting” (David O’Brien\, The Barefoot Review\, June 15\, 2019). \nJosh “Socalled” Dolgin is a pianist\, producer\, composer\, arranger\, rapper\, singer\, journalist\, photographer\, filmmaker\, magician\, cartoonist and puppet maker. He has lectured and led master classes in music festivals from Moscow to Paris\, London to LA\, and Krakow to San Francisco\, performing on every continent. With 6 solo albums to his name\, his list of collaborators knows no generational\, social\, cultural\, nor religious boundaries.
