SUMMARY:Ottawa Chamberfest | Meghan Lindsay & Carson Becke
DESCRIPTION:It is with pleasure that Chamberfest presents local favourites Meghan Lindsay and Carson Becke. This art song duo formed in the Gatineau Hills during the pandemic\, where they discovered common ground “…in a style of music making that is creative and truly collaborative.“ \nPraised internationally for her outstanding delivery of operatic repertoire\, Canadian soprano Meghan Lindsay continues a diverse practice as a performer\, creator\, and researcher\, while Carson Becke’s interest in bringing to light music from the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries that has “escaped twenty-first century attention” is reflected in their programme\, highlighting composers Fernando Obrador\, Alexander von Zemlinsky\, and Rebecca Clarke. Lindsay and Becke will also be performing Becke’s 2023 piano transcription of Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs. Written in 1948 – only months before Strauss’s death – the sublime music and text explores the relationship between humankind’s mortality and the eternal cycles of nature. With a voice described by OPERA NEWS as a “bright\, limpid instrument [with] luscious timbre and superb technique\,” this duo is sure to shine. \nLook out for Becke’s sustainably-minded Pontiac Enchanté concert series in Luskville\, Quebec\, and the newly minted Hills Winter Music Festival (formed in partnership with Lindsay and clarinetist Juan Gabriel Olivares)\, bringing world-class chamber music to venues in the Outaouais region.

SUMMARY:Ottawa Chamberfest | Pianist Sergio Emilio Parra: Liminal Mindspaces
DESCRIPTION:Mexican pianist/composer Sergio Emilio Parra makes his Chamberfest debut. Based in Ottawa\, Parra recently completed his MA in Music & Culture at Carleton University. His music integrates his Classical pianistic technique with his experimental compositional style\, often incorporating elements of electronic music production and visuals. \nLiminal Mindspaces (2023) is an electroacoustic performance that explores the liminality of post-pandemic times through electronic soundscapes\, composed by Parra\, which serve as an atmosphere on top of which he improvises on the piano using both traditional and extended techniques. In addition\, the show includes a series of Philip Glass’s piano pieces reworked with electronics. Liminal Mindspaces is an immersive sonic experience – an attempt to explore the human psyche in uncertain times. \nAdmission is free but donations are welcome. \nSergio Emilio Parra\, piano

SUMMARY:Ottawa Chamberfest | Introducing Isidore String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Winners of the 2022 Banff International String Quartet Competition and a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant\, the American ensemble combines old and new with a varied program stretching from Beethoven and Bach to Aida Shirazi and a piece by Ottawa’s own Dinuk Wijeratne\, The Disappearance of Lisa Gherardini. Affectionately called “The Heist”\, the young quartet’s rambunctious performance of the commissioned work about the theft of the Mona Lisa won them their career-launching award\, with tours of North America and Europe starting shortly after. In contrast to the high octane “Heist”\, contemporary Iranian composer Aida Shirazi’s piece Umbra is a “process\, in which musical events unfold glacially\, reveal[ing] and express[ing] itself with reservedness.” Don’t miss their Ottawa debut where the Isidores are set to engage and inspire “through the art of collaboration and play\,” using “the vital tradition of the string quartet [as their] playground.”

SUMMARY:Toronto Summer Music | Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Frautschi\, violin\nKelly Hall-Tompkins\, violin\nBarry Shiffman\, viola\nMatthew Zalkind\, cello\nPhilip Chiu\, piano \nGabriela Lena Frank: Four Folk Songs\nIman Habibi: Relics\nJerry Bock: “If I Were a Rich Man” from Fiddler on the Roof (arr. Kelly Hall-Tompkins)\nJerry Bock: “Fiddler Rhapsody and Scherzo” from Fiddler on the Roof (arr. Oran Eldor)\nDvořák: Piano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat Major\, Op. 87\, B. 162 \nMusic that celebrates a variety of traditions – from central Europe to Iran\, from the concert hall to the stage of a Broadway theatre – makes up this exhilarating program. Like so much music by nineteenth-century Czech composer Dvořák\, this profound chamber work echoes with the traditional songs and dances of his native land. Many others have followed in his footsteps. Two recent examples contribute to this concert: Gabriela Lena Frank with her Folk Songs\, patterned on the melodies of her mother’s home country\, Peru\, and Iranian Canadian composer Iman Habibi\, whose talents have earned him numerous commissions from such major-league ensembles such as the Boston and Toronto Symphony Orchestras. His composition\, Relics\, is a theme and variations. The theme is original. “Each of the following variations\, each relic\,” he says\, “explores a distant memory of my childhood.” The concert is rounded out by familiar selections from the classic 1960s musical Fiddler on the Roof including the famous “If I were a Rich Man” performed and arranged by none other than Kelly Hall-Tompkins\, known equally for her Broadway performances of the famous tune and her illustrious career as soloist and chamber musician.

SUMMARY:Ottawa Chamberfest | The Westerlies
DESCRIPTION:The Westerlies\, “an arty quartet…mixing ideas from jazz\, new classical\, and Appalachian folk” (New York Times)\, are a New York-based brass quartet comprised of childhood friends Riley Mulherkar and Chloe Rowlands (trumpet) and Andy Clausen and Willem de Koch (trombone). From Carnegie Hall to Coachella\, The Westerlies navigate a wide array of venues and projects with the precision of a string quartet\, the audacity of a rock band\, and the charm of a family sing-along. Formed in 2011\, the self-described “accidental brass quartet” explore jazz\, roots\, and chamber music influences to create that rarest of hybrids: music that is both “folk-like and composerly\, lovely and intellectually rigorous” (NPR Music). \nFor their Chamberfest debut\, The Westerlies will present music from their new album Move (available for purchase in your favourite format)\, a bold and ferociously unique vision of brass that exclusively features the music of living composers. Traditional expectations of brass repertoire are overturned as works originally written for string quartet\, solo piano\, and the human voice are reinvented through The Westerlies’ kaleidoscopic lens. Leading composers of our time including Caroline Shaw and Nico Muhly are presented alongside new works by each member of the ensemble. Imbued with the spirit of improvisation and a folk-like approachability\, enjoy an informal atmosphere at Club SAW as The Westerlies present this body of music with their signature precision and virtuosity\, in the process crafting a sound that is warm and tactile\, bold and expressive\, and at once familiar while remaining completely their own. \nThe Westerlies
