SUMMARY:The National Ballet of Canada | Romeo and Juliet
DESCRIPTION:Alexei Ratmansky created his stunning adaptation of Romeo and Juliet for The National Ballet of Canada in 2011 to open the company’s 60th anniversary season. The production is true to the colour and character of 16th century Verona and the choreography includes fast footwork\, expressive pas de deux and inspired ensemble work that drives the story. Romeo and Juliet is pure Ratmansky\, a thoughtful and visually striking revival of one of ballet’s great narrative works. \nThe Story\nVerona is the site of a longstanding feud between two families\, the Montagues and the Capulets. Romeo\, a Montague\, falls in love with Juliet\, a forbidden Capulet\, and they marry in secret. When Juliet learns she is pledged in marriage to someone else\, she takes a sleeping potion to convince her family she is dead. She sends news of her plan to Romeo but he does not receive it. Believing Juliet dead\, Romeo takes his own life and she\, on waking\, takes hers.

SUMMARY:National Arts Centre | Mozart’s Don Giovanni
DESCRIPTION:Opera is back at the NAC with a thrilling performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni\, featuring a superstar cast of soloists and Ottawa’s amazing and ever-versatile Ewashko Singers under the direction of Laurence Ewashko. \nDon Giovanni is undeniably one of Mozarts’s supreme achievements\, but did you know it is also widely regarded as the finest opera of all time? Overflowing with comedy\, tragedy\, drama\, and the supernatural\, Don Giovanni recounts the conquests and ultimate downfall of the womanizing Giovanni\, all wrapped in some of the most beautiful music ever written. \nIn a single day\, Giovanni (an irresistible rogue who is loved by women everywhere almost as much as he loves himself) leaves a trail of debauchery\, ravaged hearts\, murder\, and mayhem\, until he is finally consumed by a force beyond the grave. \nA truly epic paean to unbridled nihilism and immorality\, Don Giovanni offers fair warning to libertines everywhere! \nThe National Arts Centre Orchestra is pleased to present Don Giovanni in collaboration with Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.
