SUMMARY:New Music Concerts | Re-Sequencing Berio: a Film/Concert Spectacular

SUMMARY:Music Toronto | Gryphon Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Gryphon Trio celebrates its 30th anniversary! The Trio continues to impress critics and audiences with its highly-refined\, dynamic performances. The Trio tours regularly throughout North America and Europe\, playing repertoire from the traditional to the contemporary. The Gryphon’s relationship with Music TORONTO – continuous since 1995 – included 10 years as our ensemble-in-residence (1998-2008). When we’re being irreverent\, we call them our house band. \nSince 2020\, the Gryphon Trio has been developing a new multimedia project entitled Echoes: Memories of the World. The work’s creative team includes Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists from Canada and Norway. Performing the work of Indigenous composers Andrew Balfour and Eliot Britton\, the Trio will appear on stage with mezzo soprano Marion Newman and interact with film and audio that includes the Nordic Voices\, a six-member choral ensemble from Norway\, and poetry by Sami author Rawdna Carita Eira. \n

SUMMARY:The Royal Conservatory of Music | Cécile McLorin Salvant
DESCRIPTION:“She sings standards\, show tunes and old novelties in a taut\, flinty\, elusively beautiful voice\, erring toward material with difficult lyrics and tough places in history.” (The New York Times) Cécile McLorin Salvant is a composer\, singer\, and visual artist. The late Jessye Norman described her as “a unique voice supported by an intelligence and full-fledged musicality\, which light up every note she sings.” Salvant has developed a passion for storytelling and finding the connections between vaudeville\, blues\, folk traditions from around the world\, theatre\, jazz\, and Baroque music. She is an eclectic curator\, unearthing rarely recorded\, forgotten songs with strong narratives\, interesting power dynamics\, unexpected twists\, and humour. She won the Thelonious Monk competition in 2010 and has received Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album for three consecutive albums. In 2020\, she received the MacArthur fellowship and the Doris Duke Artist Award. Nonesuch Records released her latest recording\, Ghost Song\, in March 2022.
