SUMMARY:The Royal Conservatory | Hilario Durán and David Virelles
DESCRIPTION:Two great pianists on two pianos perform original compositions and works by other seminal Latin jazz composers. \nCuban-born Hilario Durán began working as a professional musician in Cuba’s Los Papa Cun-Cun Ensemble and in a variety of musical formats\, and later was Chucho Valdés’s chosen successor in Cuba’s most modern big band\, Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna. He toured worldwide and performed with Dizzy Gillespie and Michel Legrand\, among many others\, and was part of Arturo Sandoval’s band\, where he was pianist/keyboardist\, arranger\, and musical director for nine years. Chucho Valdés has acknowledged Durán as one of the greatest Cuban pianists of the 20th century\, calling the Grammy Award nominated and multi Juno Award winner “an unparalleled pianist\, composer\, and arranger of the first order.” \nSantiago de Cuba-born pianist David Virelles was named #1 Rising Star in the piano category by DownBeat in 2017 and has won numerous awards\, including the Oscar Peterson Prize. “His piano style is deceptively simple\, concealing complex ideas about harmony and rhythm\, and onstage he maintains a distant presence\, letting his music speak for itself.” (JazzTimes)

SUMMARY:Music Toronto | Pacifica Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Nicholas Van Kuijk and his partner are expecting\, so the Quatuor Van Kuijk is not travelling in October. We are pleased that the Pacifica Quartet agreed to accept the date. \nFounded 1994\, the Pacifica Quartet won both the Naumburg and the Cleveland Quartet awards. Quartet-in-residence at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music for the past decade\, the Quartet also leads the Center for Advanced Quartet Studies at the Aspen Music Festival and School multiple Grammy awards. The Pacifica played for us in 1999 and 2010. \nFrom the soulful melodies of the African American spiritual to the expressive dissonance of jazz improvisation\, from folk songs to the beauty of indigenous bird calls\, sounds from the American experience have inspired composers to create new music throughout our rich history. ‘American Folk Inspirations’ is a celebration of these influences on artists as showcased in four distinctly original string quartets of Florence Price\, Frederick Tillis\, Sean Shepherd and Antonin Dvořák. Spanning a period of 125 years\, these composers articulate in their own voice musical influences garnered from their unique experiences in three distinct times in America’s history: the Industrial Revolution\, Black Tuesday and the stock market crash\, the tumultuous upheaval of the Civil Rights Era\, and the present day. \n
