SUMMARY:Canadian Opera Company/Against the Grain | Mozart's Requiem (online)
DESCRIPTION:This multi-disciplinary presentation in collaboration with Against the Grain Theatre invites us to reckon with the impact of COVID-19—and heal together through the power of Mozart’s astonishingly moving Requiem. \nIncorporating interviews with front-line medical workers and community members directly affected by the pandemic\, this interpretation conceived by Joel Ivany and Johannes Debus connects individual stories of loss and resilience to the sonic world of Mozart’s heartbreakingly beautiful piece. The result charts a passage out of the darkest days of an unprecedented global event towards a new hope for a brighter tomorrow. \nFeaturing artists from the COC Ensemble Studio training program\, as well as Kwagiulth and Stó:lo First Nations mezzo-soprano Marion Newman\, this Requiem is a showcase of the next generation of voices in opera. \nCast & Creative Team\nMidori Marsh\, soprano\nMarion Newman\, mezzo-soprano\nAndrew Haji\, tenor\nVartan Gabrielian\, bass \nConductor: Johannes Debus\nDirector: Joel Ivany\nAssociate Director: Andrew Adridge\nProduction Associate: Renee Fajardo\nPrice Family Chorus Master: Sandra Horst  \nWith the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra and Chorus \nHow to watch

SUMMARY:PODIUM 2022 Choral Festival | Shallaway Youth Choir & Winnipeg Boys' Choir Senior
DESCRIPTION:Shallaway Youth Choiris an internationally recognized and celebrated organization that is dedicated to exploring\, developing\, and celebrating cultural expression through choral music. Through our commitment to artistic exploration and the preservation of our rich cultures\, our choristers learn the value of independence\, discipline\, and confidence\, while also gaining a sense of pride and identity – as Newfoundlanders and Labradorians – and as global citizens. Founded in 1992\, amid the devastating economic recession that resulted from the collapse of the cod fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador\, Shallaway Youth Choir will proudly celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2022-23. Once a beacon of hope during a challenging time\, Shallaway has now become an example of vision and perseverance. Ultimately\, in a wider aim to contribute to a vibrant inclusive society\, we aspire to empower our young people to be proactive contributors and critical agents of change. Shallaway believes that the very nature and setting of choral music offers the powerful possibility for transformative community building. \nThe NL Deaf Choir began their journey in 2019 with a one-time performance in a Deaf Awareness video. Following the explosive success of this campaign\, they have since collaborated with various groups locally\, nationally\, and internationally\, through performances\, workshops\, and presentations. At a time when the world is shining a light on marginalized groups\, the choir illuminates the voices of the Deaf community. \nNow in its 97th season\, the Winnipeg Boys’ Choir(WBC) is an auditioned ensemble dedicated to high-quality music making and vocal training in a convivial atmosphere. Probably Canada’s oldest independent boys’ choir\, it was founded as a treble choir in 1925 by the Men’s Musical Club\, an instrumental organization in the conception of local institutions such as the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra\, Philharmonic Choir\, and Music Festival. Led by Artistic Director and Treble Chorus conductor Carolyn Boyes\, the choir presents two concerts each season. The Treble Chorus\, co-conducted by Albert Bergen\, the Senior Chorus\, under Spencer Duncanson\, and the full choir regularly perform with our city’s finest arts organizations and support our community through fundraising and outreach performances. For a decade\, the Senior Chorus has nurtured maturing singers through the voice change as they develop vocal confidence and musical sophistication. Our Senior Chorus is representing the WBC at Podium 2022.
