SUMMARY:Canadian Opera Company/Against the Grain | Mozart's Requiem (online)
DESCRIPTION:This multi-disciplinary presentation in collaboration with Against the Grain Theatre invites us to reckon with the impact of COVID-19—and heal together through the power of Mozart’s astonishingly moving Requiem. \nIncorporating interviews with front-line medical workers and community members directly affected by the pandemic\, this interpretation conceived by Joel Ivany and Johannes Debus connects individual stories of loss and resilience to the sonic world of Mozart’s heartbreakingly beautiful piece. The result charts a passage out of the darkest days of an unprecedented global event towards a new hope for a brighter tomorrow. \nFeaturing artists from the COC Ensemble Studio training program\, as well as Kwagiulth and Stó:lo First Nations mezzo-soprano Marion Newman\, this Requiem is a showcase of the next generation of voices in opera. \nCast & Creative Team\nMidori Marsh\, soprano\nMarion Newman\, mezzo-soprano\nAndrew Haji\, tenor\nVartan Gabrielian\, bass \nConductor: Johannes Debus\nDirector: Joel Ivany\nAssociate Director: Andrew Adridge\nProduction Associate: Renee Fajardo\nPrice Family Chorus Master: Sandra Horst  \nWith the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra and Chorus \nHow to watch

SUMMARY:PODIUM 2022 Choral Festival | Jason Max Ferdinand Singers
DESCRIPTION:The Jason Max Ferdinand Singers is a project that I have thought about since 2001. I had the sound of the ensemble in my head\, and had plans to make a debut the summer of 2020\, but COVID-19 forced a hiatus. In January of 2021\, a creative opportunity was asked of me\, and after some hesitation and contemplation\, I decided to take a dive into the deep\, feeling I would be a dupe not to heed the signs! \nThe Jason Max Ferdinand Singers has been birthed and the ensemble will now begin its unifying journey. It is with gratitude and humility that I bring to you these talented singers who breathe life into the works of outstanding composers\, as we all move forward in our lives and times.  – Jason Max Ferdinand\, Founder and Artistic Director

SUMMARY:PODIUM 2022 Choral Festival | Dead of Winter
DESCRIPTION:Dead of Winter – formerly known as Camerata Nova – is a vocal ensemble located in Winnipeg\, Manitoba. Since 1996\, we have been engaging and transforming music lovers with an annual concert series alongside a host of other innovative projects. We emerged from the isolation of our pandemic cocoon with a new name and a bold new identity. Dead of Winter is about powerful voices that tell stories\, weaving together the talents of emerging and established artists. We support and collaborate with creatives from all backgrounds. We reimagine choir and performance\, live and online. We are a platform for original work to be discovered and for early music to be rediscovered. For us\, winter is a season for creativity and rebirth. Who knows what treasures await beneath the frozen landscape at the center of Canada? \nCaptive is the third in a series of Truth and Reconciliation concerts created by Andrew Balfour to acknowledge and honor the pain\, sorrow\, and beauty of the experience of Canada’s Indigenous peoples. The title of the show is its theme.\nIn February 2020\, Dead of Winter hosted a composer gathering in Neubergthal\, Manitoba at which Indigenous composers Andrew Balfour\, Eliot Britton and Cris Dirksen came together to workshop their ideas. Then COVID-19 hit. This has only strengthened their writing. Andrew and Cris have each created works in several movements into which Eliot has woven his electro-acoustic magic.

SUMMARY:Kindred Spirits Orchestra | Love and Turmoil
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the sixteenth century fresco by Raphael\, Hindemith paints his own endearing musical picture depicting the myth of Amor and Psyché. Internationally renowned award-winning Spanish Bulgarian pianist Ludmil Angelov takes centre stage with Rachmaninoff’s colourful and jazz-flavoured Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 4. Written during the years of postwar Stalinist Russia\, Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 6 is a tragically ominous reflection of society and the composer’s own inner turmoil. \nKristian Alexander | conductor\nLudmil Angelov | pianist\nMichael Berec | host \nIntermission discussion and Q&A with Ludmil Angelov and Michael Berec. \nThis concert is part of KSO Flex so you can choose an available option: attend in-person\, watch via live-streaming or watch via a recording.
