SUMMARY:Canadian Opera Company | Espiral by OKAN (online)
DESCRIPTION:With a name that means “heart” in the Afro-Cuban religion of Santeria\, the Toronto-based women-led group OKAN crafts songs that explore immigration\, courage\, and love. \nHaving received JUNO\, Canadian Folk Music\, and Independent Music Award nominations for their debut album Sombras\, OKAN’s sophomore offering\, Espiral delves deeper into the group’s rich Cuban roots\, finding renewed inspiration in that musical heritage. \nIn this concert\, OKAN performs selections from Espiral\, their 2021 Juno Award-winning album\, fusing jazz\, folk\, and global rhythms with Afro-Cuban roots. It’s a performance that draws upon a multiplicity of musical influences and the multicultural mosaic of Toronto. \nCast & Creative Team\nOKAN:\nElizabeth Rodriguez\, vocals/violin\nMagdelys Savigne\, vocals/percussion\nJeremy Ledbetter\, piano\nRoberto Mederos\, bass\nFrank Nodarse\, drums

SUMMARY:Canadian Opera Company/Against the Grain | Mozart's Requiem (online)
DESCRIPTION:This multi-disciplinary presentation in collaboration with Against the Grain Theatre invites us to reckon with the impact of COVID-19—and heal together through the power of Mozart’s astonishingly moving Requiem. \nIncorporating interviews with front-line medical workers and community members directly affected by the pandemic\, this interpretation conceived by Joel Ivany and Johannes Debus connects individual stories of loss and resilience to the sonic world of Mozart’s heartbreakingly beautiful piece. SUMMARY:Royal Conservatory | Redman · Mehldau · McBride · Blade: A MoodSwing Reunion
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated tenor saxophonist and composer Joshua Redman’s 1994 album MoodSwing introduced his first permanent band\, an astonishing collection by four precociously talented musicians who would rapidly establish themselves as creative beacons. After years of individual triumphs\, Redman reunites the original group\, all Koerner Hall regulars — pianist Brad Mehldau\, who won the 2020 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album\, bassist Christian McBride\, and drummer Brian Blade — for an unforgettable performance of brand new material alongside signature work that showcases Redman’s “musical breadth\, emotional depth and intellectual savvy” (Chicago Tribune). Their reunion has resulted in the brilliant new album RoundAgain.
