SUMMARY:Canadian Opera Company | Espiral by OKAN (online)
DESCRIPTION:With a name that means “heart” in the Afro-Cuban religion of Santeria\, the Toronto-based women-led group OKAN crafts songs that explore immigration\, courage\, and love. \nHaving received JUNO\, Canadian Folk Music\, and Independent Music Award nominations for their debut album Sombras\, OKAN’s sophomore offering\, Espiral delves deeper into the group’s rich Cuban roots\, finding renewed inspiration in that musical heritage. \nIn this concert\, OKAN performs selections from Espiral\, their 2021 Juno Award-winning album\, fusing jazz\, folk\, and global rhythms with Afro-Cuban roots. It’s a performance that draws upon a multiplicity of musical influences and the multicultural mosaic of Toronto. \nCast & Creative Team\nOKAN:\nElizabeth Rodriguez\, vocals/violin\nMagdelys Savigne\, vocals/percussion\nJeremy Ledbetter\, piano\nRoberto Mederos\, bass\nFrank Nodarse\, drums

SUMMARY:Canadian Opera Company/Against the Grain | Mozart's Requiem (online)
DESCRIPTION:This multi-disciplinary presentation in collaboration with Against the Grain Theatre invites us to reckon with the impact of COVID-19—and heal together through the power of Mozart’s astonishingly moving Requiem. \nIncorporating interviews with front-line medical workers and community members directly affected by the pandemic\, this interpretation conceived by Joel Ivany and Johannes Debus connects individual stories of loss and resilience to the sonic world of Mozart’s heartbreakingly beautiful piece. The result charts a passage out of the darkest days of an unprecedented global event towards a new hope for a brighter tomorrow. \nFeaturing artists from the COC Ensemble Studio training program\, as well as Kwagiulth and Stó:lo First Nations mezzo-soprano Marion Newman\, this Requiem is a showcase of the next generation of voices in opera. \nCast & Creative Team\nMidori Marsh\, soprano\nMarion Newman\, mezzo-soprano\nAndrew Haji\, tenor\nVartan Gabrielian\, bass \nConductor: Johannes Debus\nDirector: Joel Ivany\nAssociate Director: Andrew Adridge\nProduction Associate: Renee Fajardo\nPrice Family Chorus Master: Sandra Horst  \nWith the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra and Chorus \nHow to watch

SUMMARY:Royal Conservatory | Asitha Tennekoon [Cancelled]
DESCRIPTION:Sri Lankan tenor Asitha Tennekoon\, a graduate of The Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School\, has quickly established himself as one of Canada’s most impressive\, versatile singing artists. He drew critical acclaim as Paul in Scottish Opera/Tapestry Opera’s Rocking Horse Winner\, receiving the 2016 Dora Award for Best Male Performance. For his performance in the 2019 world premiere of Shanawdithit (Nolan/Burry) with Tapestry Opera\, Ian Ritchie of Opera Going Toronto wrote: “Tennekoon’s savage depiction of vicious racist magistrate and merchant John Peyton is nothing less than harrowing.” \nIn this performance\, Tennekoon revisits his musical journey so far\, as an artist born and raised in Sri Lanka navigating the unfamiliar world of opera\,  through a rich tapestry of musical styles from Sri Lankan folk songs to high baroque\, from bel canto opera to contemporary art song and musical theatre. Asitha shares his joys and challenges on the way to finding a home in the world of western classical music.
