SUMMARY:Trio Arkel | Brahms and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Brahms – Clarinet Quintet\nKulesha – Trio for Violin\, Viola\, and Cello\nBartók – Romanian Dances\nBarber – Adagio \nSpecial Guests:\nEric Abramovitz\, Clarinet\nAaron Schwefel\, Violin\nVictor Fournelle-Blain\, Viola \nA beautiful Sunday afternoon for Concert 2 featuring guest clarinetist Eric Abramovitz. We turn to Brahms\, a composer\, pianist\, and conductor during the Romantic period firmly rooted in the structures and compositional techniques of the Classical masters. The Clarinet Quintet is considered to be one of the most exquisitely beautiful pieces of chamber music ever written. Brahms’ writing for the clarinet is considered by many to be absolute perfection. Combined with the ensemble writing\, this extraordinary piece highlights the glorious colours of each instrument. \nThis incredible rich tapestry of sound from the masters inspires and captivates the imagination. As a young composer\, Gary Kulesha fell under the influence of many of the great composers of the past. Kulesha wrote his Trio for Violin\, Viola and Cello when he was only 16 years old\, at a time in which chamber music had a profound impact on his life\, and ultimately his contribution to the evolution of the genre in the 20th Century and beyond. \nTickets\, here.

SUMMARY:Reubke Organ & Piano Sonata — Double Bill
DESCRIPTION:Little known composer Julius Reubke was Liszt’s favourite pupil in Weimar\, where he composed the Piano Sonata in B flat minor – profoundly influenced by the Lisztian model – and the Organ Sonata on the 94th Psalm in C minor\, which is believed to be one of the greatest organ works in the classical repertoire. \nThis unique and never before played double bill in Toronto showcases Reubke’s two most famous sonatas\, performed by Imre Olah on organ and Anastasia Rizikov on piano.\nDying at the age of 24 and leaving only a handful of compositions and the heartfelt testimonials of teachers and friends\, Julius Reubke represents one of the most intriguing might-have-beens of the Romantic era in Germany.\nLiszt’s words\, in a letter of condolence to Reubke’s father\, are often quoted: ‘Truly no one could feel more deeply the loss which Art has suffered in your Julius\, than the one who has followed with admiring sympathy his noble\, constant and successful strivings in these latter years\, and who will ever remain true to the memory of his friendship.’
