SUMMARY:The Piano Lunaire | Aaron Copland: The Music Within
DESCRIPTION:Join Adam Sherkin on October 10 in Toronto for this unique performance event! This recital is part of a concert tour that includes stops in Buffalo\, Toronto and New York City. \nTHE STORY: Aaron Copland was a fine pianist. In 1926\, he premiered his own “Jazz” piano concerto. Continuing to write for the instrument throughout his career\, Copland turned increasingly to other pianists for interpretation. On October 25th\, 1957\, William Masselos gave the premiere performance of the composer’s PIANO FANTASY at The Juilliard School in New York City. Masselos played the fantasy twice\, punctuated by a short intermission. Originally subtitled ‘The Music Within\,’ the Fantasy remained close to Copland’s heart throughout his life. To commemorate the 62nd anniversary of its premiere\, Adam Sherkin presents a re-creation of the 1957 performance\, including world premiers of his own music\, commissioned especially for the occasion: a prelude\, “The Music Within” and a postlude\, “The Music Beyond.” \nTHE SHOW: Tickets are available on this platform or at the door (same price). Wine and beer will be available for purchase and a short\, 20-minute intermission will punctuate both performances of the Copland Fantasy. Don’t miss this exclusive recital experience! \nTHE PROGRAM: \nSHERKIN: Prelude The Music Within (2019)* \nCOPLAND: Piano Fantasy (1955-57) \nIntermission \nCOPLAND: Piano Fantasy (performance repeated) \nSHERKIN: Postlude The Music Beyond (2019)* \n*World premieres \nTickets\, here.

SUMMARY:Tafelmusik | Haus Musik: Café Counterculture
DESCRIPTION:1730 Leipzig to 1960 Yorkville \nIt’s 1730s Leipzig\, Germany. J.S. Bach and his colleagues gather at Zimmerman’s coffee house for weekly concerts featuring the new music of the day. Fast forward to Toronto in the 1960s. Yorkville (now known as the ‘Mink Mile’) is a hub of subversion and anti-establishment activism. Undiscovered artists are making their breaks and international acts have come to sling it in underground dives and coffee houses. Legends of this counterculture scene pepper music collections across the world. \nFor this first Haus Musik concert of the 2019/20 season\, Tafelmusik’s baroque flair and artistry meet folk favorites from Yorkville’s colourful past. Sonatas by Bach and friends will be interspersed with new arrangements of iconic songs by Buffy Saint-Marie\, Joni Mitchell\, Simon and Garfunkel\, and others. \nCurated with guest artists Andrew Downing (double bass\, arranger) and Alex Samaras (vocals)\, CAFÉ COUNTERCULTURE is a trip down memory lane well worth taking. \nCurated by:\nMarco Cera\, Andrew Downing\, and Alex Samaras \nFeaturing:\nAndrew Downing\, double bass\, arranger\nAlex Samaras\, vocals \nMembers of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir:\nMarco Cera\, oboe\nElisa Citterio\, violin\nDominic Teresi\, bassoon\nCharlotte Nediger\, harpsichord \nLighting design:\nChris Malkowski\, lighting designer \nTickets\, here.
