SUMMARY:Toronto Choral Society | Two French Requiems
DESCRIPTION:The two Requiems by Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Duruflé on this program represent two masterpieces of French music and they have a great deal in common. Both composers were excellent organists as well as meticulous and self-critical composers: Fauré took 20 years to complete his Requiem while Duruflé took six to finish his. Both scored their works for choir\, 2 soloists\, organ and orchestra and instead of emphasizing the dramatic emotion of the Day of Judgement preferred by other composers like Mozart and Verdi\, they took a more atmospheric and peaceful approach to the Mass for the Dead. These works differ most in their strengths: the charming and popular Fauré was a master of “the unfolding melody” while Duruflé\, writing a half-century later\, was greatly interested in scoring and orchestration. Both qualities come together in this concert and reinforce what Fauré described as “a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.” \nThe Toronto Choral Society was founded in 1845\, to foster a positive musical environment in which members can learn and develop both musical ability and choral repertoire. In addition\, TCS aims to be an integral part of the community of Toronto\, presenting important works from the traditional choral repertoire\, exploring the music of the many cultures that make up our community\, and making an active contribution to the life of the city by participating in community events. \nFeaturing \nThe Talisker Players \nBeste Kalender – Mezzo Soprano \nDion Mazerolle – Baritone \nWilliam O’Meara – Organist \nGeoffrey Butler – Artistic Director and Conductor

SUMMARY:Toronto Symphony Orchestra | Mahler Symphony No. 7
DESCRIPTION:Mahler’s Seventh is the most unique of all of his symphonies—a gallery of five sharply etched portraits embracing everything from commanding fanfares and marches to the eerie nocturnal rustlings of a diabolical scherzo and a restful serenade that includes solos for guitar and mandolin. Illustrious pianist Louis Lortie joins Sir Andrew Davis and the TSO for César Franck’s charming set of variations for piano and orchestra. \nConcert running time is approximately two hours including a 20-minute intermission.
