Perhaps the most popular of all Baroque-period orchestral compositions, the four vivid and immensely colourful violin concertos that make up Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons are a primary example of program music, the kind that takes inspiration from such outside influences as stories, places, atmospheres and philosophical ideas. Storms blow across the landscapes, shepherds play their pipes, insects buzz, dogs bark, autumn festivals follow their jolly, dancing courses, people slip and slide on frozen streams – all to the tune of a virtuoso violin soloist. Also on the program is another prime example of painting in sound, Czech composer Heinrich Biber’s Battaglia (1673). Among the characters and scenes it depicts are a rowdy band of musketeers; the god Mars, in a spectacular violin solo; Bacchus, god of wine; a battle; and a concluding lament for the wounded. It includes references to folk airs and popular tunes of the day.
