A magical mystery tour of opera, chamber music and folk forms
Fossegrimen: A Scandinavian water creature that sits naked by waterfalls and plays the fiddle, attracting passersby to come and listen.
We pull out all the stops for our season finale in mounting a multi-stage event ambitious in scope and fun for the whole family. Our Sanctuary, Courtyard and even the Fellowship Room get in on the action as we make the most of the pre-summer weather to throw our doors open!
Fossegrimen will be a musical experience exploring folklore, fairy tales, and legends, with an interactive element for audience members. The event will be made up of three main sets: an original immersive opera written by Chris Thornborrow and based on the lesser-known Brothers Grimm fairy tale “The Moon”; a performance by members of Ensemble Polaris (Canada’s “Arctic Fusion Band”) dealing with magic, myth, and mystery; and the Canadian premiere of Elliott Cole’s Babinagar, a twenty-minute work based on an Afghan folktale.
Audience members will be immersed into a world of fairy tales and myths, complete with medieval music in the courtyard and an interactive re-telling of the Brother’s Grimm “The Moon.”
This is a family-friendly event, and will feature some of Toronto’s most talented musicians. But remember, you mustn’t dare utter Fossegrimen’s name to him, for it will instantly mean his death!
