Ernest Balmer Studio – Studio 315, 9 Trinity Street, Toronto
Committed to experimentation and innovation, the annual Tap:Ex series explores modes through which opera might assume a twenty-first century rebirth.
Forbidden explores the how acts and behaviors that are forbidden relate. From tasting the forbidden fruit through examinations of the contemporary ideas of body and controls placed on it, Iranian-Canadian composer Afarin Mansouri and spoken word artist and playwright Donna-Michelle St. Bernard play with the taboo in a mix of Persian culture, hip hop, and food. The work explores the dynamic and sensory tension between what is forbidden and what entices and tempts. The work explores the dark side of the forbidden, serious aspects of repression, countered with humorous commentary on human nature’s temptations to explore the forbidden.
