SUMMARY:Royal Conservatory of Music | Kevin Chen
DESCRIPTION:The Canadian prodigy makes his Koerner Hall debut with a program of works by Chopin\, Liszt\, and Schubert. \nStarting to play at just five years old\, by age eight Kevin Chen had been named one of CBC’s Top 30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians under 30 and became the youngest person in Canada to earn The Royal Conservatory of Music’s associate’s diploma. He has since won numerous accolades: he is the youngest-ever winner of the Franz Liszt International Piano Competition\, he won first prize at the Concours de Genève\, and first prize in the Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master Competition. \nSince his first orchestral debut at the age of seven\, Chen has performed with world-class orchestras like the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra\, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra\, and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. As well as being an exceptional musician\, Chen is an accomplished composer and has over 100 works to his name. \nProgram:\nFryderyk Chopin: Ballade No. 1 in G Minor\, op. 23\nFryderyk Chopin: Polonaise-fantaisie No. 7 in A flat Major\, op. 61\nFryderyk Chopin: Variations on “Là ci darem la mano” from Mozart’s Don Giovanni\, op. 2\nFranz Liszt: Ballade No. 2 in B Minor\, S. 171\nFranz Schubert: “Erlkönig\,” S. 558\, no. 4 (transc. Liszt)\nFranz Liszt: Sonetto 104 del Petrarca\, S. 161\, no. 5 from Années de pèlerinage II\nFranz Liszt: Réminiscences de Don Juan\, S. 418 \nKevin Chen’s recital is generously supported by Heather Bala Edwards.
