Bernstein’s Candide is Toronto Operetta Theatres’ Holiday production this season. Upstaged by West Side Story but never obscured, the operetta has become the darling of opera companies and Broadway through the sheer power of its drama, music and imaginative splendour! The work is one of Leonard Bernstein’s most accomplished compositions. He himself called it an operetta and it premiered on Broadway in 1956. Barbara Cook starred as Cunegonde and the bravura aria Glitter and be Gay is now sung by prize-winning sopranos the world over. Derek Bate conducts the cast and orchestra and Guillermo Silva-Marin is stage director.
