Enjoy new music with our classical music chart for this week. Our weekly selections are based on sales numbers and simply what albums we love and think you NEED to hear.
For the complete top 20, tune into Classical Chartz with the New Classical FM’s Mark Wigmore every Saturday from 3-5 p.m.
Yunchan Lim, with Tchaikovsky: Seasons, and Viviane Audet, with Le Piano et Le Torrent, retain their hold on the top two spots in the Classical Chartz, respectively, for a second week in a row.
At No. 3, Joyce DiDonato’s Dido & Aeneas makes the climb from No. 7 last week, with Hauser’s Cinema close behind. Hauser steps up from No. 8 to land at No. 4.
There’s one newcomer on the Classical Chartz this week: River of Music by The Kanneh-Masons, which rises from No. 13 to land at No. 10.
The UK-based Kanneh-Mason family has been dubbed “musical marvels” by The Guardian. This new album combines the talents of all seven siblings, including Isata, Braimah, Sheku, Konya, Jeneba, Aminata and Mariatu. The clan last got together for the Carnival album in 2020.
This new release on the Deutsche Grammphon label includes new arrangements of folk songs and beloved works from the classical canon. At the heart of it is Schubert’s Trout Quintet, a favourite of the family that the whole family grew listening to.
River of Music was recorded in Abbey Road Studios during the summer of 2024, and celebrates the family’s love of music, and their roots from Wales to Sierra Leone to Antigua.
“This is a story about our family and the sources of our music. Music runs like a river through the generations, and our passion for listening and playing music comes from our grandparents, and from their stories, flowing from the places and dreams they passed on…”
The tracks include music by Coleridge-Taylor, Handel, Elgar, Chopin, Liszt, Dvorak, a traditional Welsh song and hymn by John Hughes, and an original piece by Isata Kanneh-Mason, in addition to the Schubert Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667.
