The London Symphony Orchestra has named Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan as LSO Associate Artist for three years.
An unprecedented move
The LSO has created the role to sit alongside the LSO’s family of conductors. The goal is to benefit from Hannigan’s distinct creative influences and develop the creative diversity of the LSO. Duties include developing new programs and making suggestions for a repertoire throughout the Season. She will also go to Europe in March 2023 with the LSO for their European tour.

Cementing a fruitful relationship
Hannigan has performed relatively often with the LSO — usually with near-unanimous rave reviews. Their relationship started with Gerald Barry’s La Plus Forte – a one-woman Opera – with the LSO in 2007 with Thomas Adès conducting and Zoltán Kocsis on the piano. Things progressed when Hannigan returned clad in a schoolgirl uniform performing Ligeti’s Mysteries of the Macabre with Simon Rattle.
