Congratulations are in order! The Ontario Arts Council has just named pianist Angela Hewitt as the winner of this year’s Oskar Morawetz Award for Excellence in Music Performance.
Every two years, the award is presented to a notable classical music performer with a recognized talent and commitment to Canadian music.
To say she fits the bill is an understatement
- Widely regarded as one of the greatest living interpreters of J.S Bach, Angela Hewitt is in high demand as a soloist and as a member of orchestras around the world
- As a recording artist, her best known work is the award-winning cycle for Hyperion Records of all the major keyboard works of Bach
- Honours include Officer of the Order of the British Empire and a Companion of the Order of Canada
- Supports music education with regular basis masterclasses
Hewitt will accept the award during a performance with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday, February 16.
About the award
The Oskar Morawetz Award was established in 2007 to honour the composer’s legacy, which spanned more than half a century in Canada’s contemporary music scene.
This year’s jury included Nicolas Ellis, Sandra Horst, and Robert Uchida.
Previous winners include Russell Braun (2019), Yannick Nézet Séguin (2017), Bramwell Tovey (2015), and Judith Forst (2013).
