It’s that time of year when we look around at our peers to point out the best of us. For a notoriously humble country, Canada’s Order Of Canada is a rare honour worth celebrating.
The Governor General of Canada, Mary Simon, has announced a whopping 135 appointments this year, including a number of artists and cultural leaders. The new appointees include 2 Companions (C.C.), 39 Officers (O.C.), 1 honorary Member and 93 Members (C.M.).
Here’s why:
- Yann Martel C.C. — one of only two admitted to the top tier companion level. Admitted for his contributions to literature and for his philanthropic commitment to the betterment of Saskatoon.
- Liona Boyd O.C. — the well-known classical guitarist was promoted to Officer for her significant and sustained contributions to Canada’s musical landscape as “The First Lady of Guitar.”
- Tomson Highway O.C. — promoted to Officer for his contributions to theatre as a playwright and novelist.
- Ian Tamblyn O.C. — for his contributions as a folk music icon and cultural ambassador.
- Reginald Schwager C.M. — one of the greats from the Canadian jazz scene.
- Jackie Richardson C.M. — a Canadian jazz legend and a community leader and mentor.
- Helga Stephenson C.M. — for her contributions to Canadian film and television.
- Janis Dunning and Jacques Lemay C.M. — for contributions to the arts and to young artists in Canada.
- Olga Eliza Korper C.M. — for contributions to the visual arts and exhibition of Canadian and international contemporary art.
- Yves Lambert C.M. — for the revival, modernization and promotion of traditional French-Canadian music.
- John Estacio, C.M. — for his work as a composer and contributions to opera.
- Andrew Paul MacDonald C.M. — contributions to contemporary Canadian classical, jazz and electronic music, as an educator, composer and performer.
- Jane Heyman C.M. — for her long-lasting contributions to Vancouver’s cultural landscape through her various roles within the theatre sector.
We can all feel patriotic today
The awards are for those who have achieved something extraordinary, or who have contributed to our shared community and service to Canada.
