Due to concerns over the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles, the Recording Academy have announced they will postpone this year’s Grammy Awards Ceremony by two weeks.
The annual event was initially scheduled for January 31, but has been postponed to Sunday, March 14, 2021. With The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah as host, the event will be broadcast on CBS from the Staples Center.
With cases in Los Angeles County topping 800,000, the feared holiday-driven spike has resulted in gyms, hair salons and restaurants being temporarily closed and residents told to stay home.
“This is the fastest acceleration of new cases than at any other time during the pandemic,” the L.A. County Department of Public Health said.
“The deteriorating COVID situation in Los Angeles, with hospital services being overwhelmed, ICUs having reached capacity, and new guidance from state and local governments have all led us to conclude that postponing our show was the right thing to do,” a press release statement reads. “Nothing is more important than the health and safety of those in our music community and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly on producing the show.”
