Some good news for arts organizations reeling from the devastating financial blow associated with the unexpected mass-cancellation of events across Canada.
The Canada Council for the Arts has announced $60M in advance funding to arts organizations that have approved funding from the 2019/20 season. This amounts to the equivalent to 35% of the annual grants held by all core funded organizations.
The funding is designed to help arts not-for-profits meet short term financial commitments to the artists and cultural workers they employ.
“There is an urgent need to alleviate the financial pressure on those organizations that are the backbone of the arts sector in Canada,” said Director and CEO Simon Brault.
These advances will be issued automatically to funded arts organizations by May 4, 2020.
This announcement follows the Council’s remarkably fast action taken last week in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
