The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO), one of Western Canada’s flagship orchestras, has said they will be laying off 66 musicians and 18 administration and support staff after being forced to cancel events due to the CODID-19 outbreak.

“We believe this step is necessary to ensure a strong and secure future for the Calgary Philharmonic and its employees,” said Paul Dornian, President & CEO of the Orchestra, in a statement.

Musicians and staff will not continue to be paid, but will continue to receive health benefits.

The CPO has cancelled events through May 16, but has yet to confirm if events through June will also be affected.

The orchestra is estimating $2 M in lost revenue due to COVID-19.

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra has also announced they will lay off musicians and staff today.
