Le Figaro has reported that Alexander Neef, Canadian Opera Company’s General Director, will be chosen as the successor to Stéphane Lissner as head of the Opéra de Paris (Paris Opera).

Lissner was first appointed in October 2012 through 2021. With his contract running out, Le Figaro’s Ariane Bavelier has stated Lissner will be extending his tenure for one more year, through 2022.

While the report has yet to be confirmed, Neef’s name was among those included on a list of ten candidates to the coveted role last March.

Neef is currently on contract with the COC through to the 2025/2026 season, and would likely have to terminate his contract early to take on the new role in Paris.

No stranger to the Paris Opera company, Neef worked at the Opéra National de Paris as Director of Casting. Neef has also worked as an artistic administrator at the Salzburg Festival as well as the Ruhr Triennale.

Most recently, Neef announced a second appointment on October 1, 2018, as Artistic Director of Santa Fe Opera.
