THE SCOOP | Art Of Time Ensemble Announce 2019/20 Season Includeing A Celebration Of Abbey Road

By Michael Vincent on February 20, 2019

The Art of Time Ensemble will kick-off the 2019–20 season with a deep dive into everything from the work of the Gershwins to a program inspired by Abbey Road.

Out of the hundreds of arts groups operating in Canada, none are quite like the Art of Time Ensemble. Lead by the curiosity of Artistic Director Andrew Burashko, they have developed a loyal following by those who understand that the divisions between musical genres are something to be celebrated.

Standing true to the Art of Time ethos, the ensemble will kick-off the 2019–20 season on September 26–28 with a deep dive into The Beatles’ classic Abbey Road album. Now reaching 50 years since it’s original release in 1969, the ensemble will expand on the album’s vocal harmonies and underlying textures.

Billed as a “The Different Holiday Concert”, December brings the Art of Time Ensemble’s annual alternative to traditional Christmas music from unsuspecting artists like Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, and Tom Lehrer. Singers include Jackie Richardson, Chris Murphy, Jessica Mitchell, Tom Wilson, David Wall and Liam Russell.

The ensemble returns in 2020 with what a season highlight exploring the origins of the Waltz in the 19th-century to the modern-day. On February 20–22, audiences will hear works in 3/4 time by Ravel and Johann Strauss Jr., Bill Evans, and Frederic Chopin, plus songs by Tom Waits, Randy Newman, Leonard Cohen, and Jacques Brel.

April 2–4 brings a portrait of George and Ira Gershwin, as interpreted by Jackie Richardson, Thom Allison, Sarah Slean, John Southworth, and Gregory Hoskins.

The season closes on May 7–9 with an exposé of Weimar culture. The program will include the musically fertile ground of 1920s Europe including The Threepenny Opera Suite by Kurt Weill and music by Erich Korngold, Arno Billing, and other artists whose names are largely lost to history.

As usual, performances will take place at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre. Subscriptions to Art of Time’s 19/20 Season will first be available to renewing subscribers now through to March 12 only.

Single tickets are available to non-members starting March 12, 2019. Details available at artoftimeensemble.com or by calling the box office at 416 973 4000.
