Meet the Bazantar: an incredibly resonant five-string bass fitted with 29 extra strings and four drone strings that sympathetically vibrate as the performers plays. The was invented between 1993 and 1997 by bassist Mark Deutsch and was patented in 1999. There is only one in the world, but would work very well an early music ensemble as part of a basso continuo section, or as part of an Indian classical music ensemble. Deutsch was inspired by the resonant nature of Indian music – especially it’s use of the overtone series. The video includes an interview with Deutsch discussing how he came up with the design idea and achieved it’s fascinating tone.
