In a press release announced this morning, Tafelmusik have confirmed l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal conductor Kent Nagano will be coming to Toronto to direct the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir in Toronto at Koerner Hall, on Thursday January 22, for a four-day engagement.

This occasion will mark the first time Nagano comes to Toronto to perform with Tafelmusik.

The relationship between Tafelmusik and Maestro Nagano originally began in 2009, when Tafelmusik brought Bach’s Mass in B Minor to Montreal to perform alongside l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal.

The show was a creative success, and prompted Nagano to subsequently invite Tafelmusik to the Reate Festival in Italy, and to join the orchestra in the inaugural gala concerts at Montréal’s flagship Maison symphonique in 2011.

The all Beethoven program will include Symphony no. 5 and the often overshadowed Mass in C Major.

The cast includes a number of familiar names: Nathalie Paulin (soprano), Laura Pudwell (mezzo-soprano) Lawrence Wiliford (tenor), and Sumner Thompson (baritone).

Baroque violinist Cecilia Bernardini, (who made her Tafelmusik debut last year in a programme of French baroque music), will serve as guest concertmaster.

There will be a public lecture one hour before each concert.
