The St Lawrence String Quartet is looking for a violinist to replace Scott St. John, who is leaving at the end of the year.
St. John joined the quartet in 2006, moving from Toronto to California, where the group has been quartet in residence at Stanford University for 15 years.
The violinist will be moving to London, Ont., where his wife, violinist Sharon Wei, has landed a teaching job at the University of Western Ontario.
St. John says that his plans are to be a full-time dad in London, the city where he grew up.
This is not the first time the Curtis Institute graduate has taken a bit of time off from the violin, and it’s hard to imagine him not being lured back into music. He left a devoted following as a teacher at University of Toronto seven years ago, and his sister, violinist Lara St. John, regularly uses him as a collaborator.
The St Lawrence String Quartet was founded in 1989, a year after St. John’s Carnegie Hall début. The group really took off after winning the Banff International String Competition in 1992. Two founding members remain: violinist Geoff Nuttall and violist Lesley Robertson.
