Tokyo researchers develop a music scanner that’s almost as good as our eyes

The Gocen music scanner, developed by researchers in Japan.

A group of researchers at Tokyo Metropolitan University have developed a handheld scanner that, running through purpose-designed software, plays sheet music.

But, judging from what I see on this video, the Gocen is not any more efficient than the eyes of my Grade 1 piano students.

Is it just me, or is there really very little real-world use for something like this?
