The Windsor Symphony Orchestra has turned to YouTube to look for a new music director to replace the energetic and creative John Morris Russell and, yesterday, was told by Windsor city council that the Capitol Theatre will be its new home, starting in September.
The building, opened in 1920, has been the subject of much debate in the economically beleaguered city since its creditors declared bankruptcy five years ago.
In an article in the Windsor Star, Doug Schmidt outlines how the Windsor Symphony will become the building’s principal tenant, paying the city $1 a year for the privilege. The bigger price to pay is a gradual elimination of the orchestra’s civic operating grant, a reduction in the number of seats available for each performance and, consequently, a possible reduction in the number of musicians it can keep on its payroll.
