The program delves into the various rival factions active in London upon Handel\u2019s arrival, featuring the results of some of the most famous rivalries of the opera world (Handel vs Bononcini, Handel vs Porpora) as well as some of the forgotten factions such as the English Opera Project and Handel\u2019s followers and successors. The vocal works will be sung the young Canadian countertenor Michael Taylor. Michael has won prizes at numerous international competitions and has performed on opera and concert stages worldwide \u2013 notably at the Hamburg State Opera, New York\u2019s Lincoln Center, Cadogan Hall in London, the Venice Arsenale, Izumi Hall in Osaka, Montreal\u2019s Maison Symphonique and the Elgin Theater Toronto. A key feature of the program will be Michael\u2019s short monologues telling of the political conflicts in London during the first half of the eighteenth century and how the musical rivalries reflected important political rivalries. Through these stories, and through performing the related music, we hope to capture and relay the sense of importance and authority that music had in eighteenth-century London.<\/p>\n
