The Glenn Gould Foundation\u00a0has\u00a0announced\u00a0that the twelfth recipient of the\u00a0Glenn Gould Prize is American opera singer and recitalist Jessye Norman.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Announced\u00a0today at a ceremony held today at Koerner Hall, the major award is offered biennially to \u201can individual for a unique lifetime contribution that has enriched the human condition through the arts.\u201d The prize promotes the \u201cvital connection between artistic excellence and the transformation of lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with the utmost humility and gratitude that I accept this magnificent honor, The Glenn Gould Prize, Norman said. \u201cMy admiration for the artistic genius of Glenn Gould began very early on in my studies and was further supported in my having had Walter Homburger as the first presenter to invite me to perform in Canada.\u00a0 His work with Glenn Gould is of course, legendary. It was he who made certain that I could experience on film the music of Bach played by a master of the keyboard and intellect of the highest order [\u2026]To have been chosen to receive this auspicious recognition is quite simply breath-taking!\u201d<\/p>\n

Brian Levine, Executive Director of The Glenn Gould Foundation stated, \u201cJessye Norman is undoubtedly one of the great vocal artists of our time, or any time, but so much more. Her career has provided a positive role model for countless artists coming from disadvantaged circumstances as she did and overcoming the very real racial barrier that thwarted so many careers. Her triumph is an expression of the power of art to transcend all human boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Norman will receive a cash prize of $100,000 and a sculpture by Canadian artist Ruth Abernethy.<\/p>\n

Jurors<\/a> included actor Viggo Mortensen, soprano Sondra Radvanovsky, director and screenwriter Fran\u00e7ois Girard, singer and actress Ute Lemper, writer and former Chief Justice The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, composers Foday Musa Suso, Howard Shore and Ye Xiaogang, and painter and conservationist Naeemeh Naeemaei.<\/p>\n

As per tradition, Norman will be given the task of choosing an\u00a0artist to receive The City of Toronto Glenn Gould Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Prize, which totals\u00a0$15,000. Both Norman and her chosen prot\u00e9g\u00e9 will receive their awards at a gala event later this year.<\/p>\n

Previous winners include:\u00a0Philip Glass<\/strong> (2015), Robert\u00a0Lepage<\/strong>\u00a0(2013),\u00a0Leonard Cohen<\/strong>\u00a0(2011),\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Jos\u00e9 Antonio Abreu<\/strong>\u00a0(2008),\u00a0Sir\u00a0Andr\u00e9\u00a0Previn<\/strong>\u00a0(2005),\u00a0Pierre Boulez<\/strong>\u00a0(2002),\u00a0Yo-Yo Ma<\/strong> (1999),\u00a0Toru Takemitsu<\/strong>\u00a0(1996),\u00a0Oscar Peterson<\/strong>\u00a0(1993),\u00a0Lord Yehudi Menuhin<\/strong>\u00a0(1990) and\u00a0R. Murray Schafer<\/strong>\u00a0(1987).<\/p>\n
