(Courtesy Library and Archives Canada)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Montreal has welcomed a slew of high-profile pianists in recent years: Rafa\u0142 Blechacz, Philip Glass, Andr\u00e1s Schiff, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Beatrice Rana and Martha Argerich number among many headliners with the Ladies\u2019 Morning Musical Club (LMMC), the Orchestre M\u00e9tropolitain, the Orchestre symphonique de Montr\u00e9al (OSM), the Fondation Arte Musica and the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Pro Musica.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0who were the pianists that came through town in the 1900s? (Photo courtesy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Vladimir Horowitz<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Appearances include: Mar. 1930 (LMMC), 1934 (LMMC), 1946, 1951, Apr. 1976<\/p>\n<p>Horowitz toured with his personal Steinway piano, a piano technician, a personal chef, a personal assistant, an air purifier, and his wife-cum-concert-manager Wanda Toscanini \u2013 daughter of the renowned conductor Arturo<\/p>\n<p>His final Montreal concert was a logistical farce. Arriving for sound check at the recital hall, the stage was littered with large percussion instruments, leftover from a percussion troupe\u2019s performance the night before.<\/p>\n<p>An exasperated Wanda said to Horowitz in French: \u00ab Nous sommes tomb\u00e9s chez les sauvages. Nous rentrons \u00e0 New York! \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, Horowitz\u2019s payment cheque for $35,000 bounced. Maybe that\u2019s why he returned afterwards to Toronto, but never to Montreal.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Marek Jablonski <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Appearances include: Nov. 1961 (OSM), 1962 (LMMC), Mar. 1969, 1975, 1977, Nov. 1979<\/p>\n<p>The Polish-Canadian pianist won the grand prize in the 1961 Jeunesses Musicales du Canada National Competition. Gilles Potvin from La Presse wrote of his Brahms Sonata No. 3, \u00ab Jablonski y r\u00e9v\u00e9la aussi une technique remarquable et un jeu capable d&rsquo;une grande puissance. Avec cette ex\u00e9cution, Jablonski s&rsquo;affirme de nouveau comme l&rsquo;un des pianistes canadiens les plus talentueux. Peut-\u00eatre aussi Mozart. Mais Beethoven est le plus personnel de tous. Comme une force myst\u00e9rieuse qui nous attire\u2026\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Vis-\u00e0-vis modern music, his avoidance revealed an old soul:<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Oh! Non. Je n\u2019ai pas le temps, Et puis, je suis trop vieux\u2026 J\u2019ai pass\u00e9 ma vie \u00e0 \u00e9tudier Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin. Cette musique demande une interpr\u00e9tation. La musique contemporaine n\u2019en demande pas\u00a0: il suffit de jouer ce qui est \u00e9crit. Cette musique manque de soleil, elle manque de foi.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Appearances include Sep. 1967, Feb. 1970<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t easy to bring Michelangeli to Canada from his sunny Italian homeland. During the Canadian leg of his North American tour in February 1970, he called off his performance in Trois-Rivi\u00e8res \u2013 jeopardizing the orchestra that was to accompany him in Beethoven\u2019s Emperor Concerto. Apparently, the cold Canadian air took a toll on his lungs.<\/p>\n<p>According to Quebec City musicologist Bertrand Guay, Michelangeli would have his personal piano technician recalibrate the piano action before the concert. Afterwards, nobody except Michelangeli would be allowed to touch it \u2013 not even the concertmaster tuning the orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>Michelangeli developed a reputation for cancelling concerts at the last minute. When he passed away in 1995, the headline \u00ab Michelangeli annule pour de bon \u00bb ran in France\u2019s <em>Lib\u00e9ration <\/em>newspape<\/p>\n<p>Apart from his piano technician, Michelangeli\u2019s touring baggage included his own Steinway piano and his piano bench.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qID2AJoF2-E?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=fr-FR&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p><em>Listen: Michelangeli performs at the World Festival at Place des Arts, Sep. 1967<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h2><strong>Vlado\u00a0<\/strong><b>Perlemuter<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The Polish-French pianist taught at the Orford Arts Centre in the early 1960s. A student of Maurice Ravel, Perlemuter gave a number of open-air performances on Mount Royal in the mid-60s. It\u2019s no longer possible to play Beethoven in Schnabel\u2019s style, or Chopin in Cortot\u2019s style.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pogorelich would go on to steal the spotlight at that year\u2019s Chopin Competition, when his early ouster saw Martha Argerich resign from the jury in protest.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sergei Prokofiev<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Appearances in Jan. and Feb. 1920, and 1930.<\/p>\n<p>Stepping off the train in Montreal, Prokofiev says he was \u00ab aveugl\u00e9 par le spectacle de la neige miroitant au soleil. \u00bb \u00a0He was promptly given boots, a scarf and a wool hat by his host.<\/p>\n<p>During his week-long visit to Montreal and Quebec City, he gave formal concerts, played informally in a house on av. Beloeil in Outremont, and practised Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s piano concerto for upcoming concert dates. In Quebec, he saw sleighs for the first time since leaving his native Russia, and described that his hotel \u00ab ressemblait de l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur \u00e0 un ch\u00e2teau. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Fluent in French, the composer made a return visit to Quebec in March 1930<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sviatoslav Richter <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Appearances include: Dec. 1960, Sep. &amp; Oct. 1964<\/p>\n<p>In Europe as much as in Montreal, Richter had a penchant for leisurely strolls.<\/p>\n<p>Claude Gingras tells of the time Richter was arrested on the McGill campus for vagrancy. The language barrier between him and police nearly prevented them from figuring out his identity \u2013 until his agent bailed him out in the middle of the night.<\/p>\n<p>Due to popular demand, he added a second performance to his d\u00e9but visit to Montreal. In Grolier\u2019s 1962 <em>Le Livre de l\u2019ann\u00e9e,<\/em> the first concert was described thus: \u00ab\u00a0Ses admirateurs le f\u00e9licitent surtout pour la facilit\u00e9 avec laquelle il communique l&rsquo;intention m\u00eame du compositeur. Moi, j\u2019en suis incapable.\u00a0\u00c7a m\u2019emmerderait d\u2019entendre tout ce bruit.
