The purchase covers all 290 titles in his catalogue (as of December 31, 2021).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s said to be the largest such deal for anyone under pensionable age \u2014 and it\u2019s the biggest deal ever for Hipgnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He follows a long list of music luminaries, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/main\/2022\/10\/11\/glenn-gould-turned-volume-music-rights\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glenn Gould<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Justin Timberlake, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. Bieber\u2019s deal is rare because his catalogue isn\u2019t that old, as compared to many of the musicians and other rights holders who have taken the plunge.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What are they selling?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The artists in question are selling the rights to their work \u2014 in other words, to collect royalties largely from the streaming of their back catalogue. That\u2019s become more and more important as statistics show, people consume more older music than new.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Kate Bush\u2019s Running Up That Hill took the world by storm more than 35 years after its original release via Netflix\u2019s Stranger Things TV series, it only accelerated an ongoing phenomenon. About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theringer.com\/2022\/8\/3\/23289714\/is-old-music-killing-new-music\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70% of the music consumed today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is older music, leaving only 30% of the pie for new artists and material. It makes that existing music all the more valuable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a company buys the rights, the revenues from the music in question go into a kind of mutual fund. Investors purchase shares in the fund, and profit when the songs are streamed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Next stop: the future<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After investing in yesterday\u2019s catalogues, the next stop is the future \u2014 or rather, a futures index. It would mean that investors could put their money on which songs would become the next streaming stars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chicago-based company <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clouty.io\/musiq\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clouty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 \u201cat the intersection of data, music and finance, re-imagining the value of music by making it a tradable asset\u201d \u2014 introduced the world\u2019s first music trading index, MUSIQ\u2122, launched in the summer of 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of online streaming, metrics are now readily available to measure and analyze activity in the music sector. It\u2019s led to the next step of the company\u2019s vision, which is the release of the MUSIQ 500 composite index that will track various genres of music and their current market value. The company uses a proprietary method with multiple inputs to calculate the value of the top 500 songs at any given time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clouty is currently looking for an exchange-traded fund to make it easy for investors to jump into the game. Futures could be linked to specific genres, artists or even songs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The push to introduce music futures funds follows a couple of years when so-called music funds have been spending billions of dollars on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2022\/08\/24\/scoop-cash-cow-canadian-based-music-fund-buys-rights-classic-recordings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquiring the ripe back catalogues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of artists and producers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>More than pop<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajournalofmusicalthings.com\/heres-a-running-list-of-artists-who-have-sold-some-or-all-of-their-song-catalogues-to-a-new-breed-of-company\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list of artists and rights holders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who\u2019ve cashed in has been dominated by pop stars, but the long list (&gt;100) includes some interesting names. When it comes to classical music, it\u2019s composers and record labels who might be positioned to take the plunge.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jazz icon John Lee Hooker\u2019s complete music rights were sold to BMG;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the catalogues of Regent Music and Jewel Music, the music of Lionel Hampton, Thelonious Monk, and other jazz classics were sold to Primary Wave;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning songwriter\/movie music composer Tom Whitlock (Danger Zone, Take My Breath Away), sold his entire catalogue to Primary Wave;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Composer\/producer Jean-Michel Jarre sold his entire publishing catalogue to BMG.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The value of the above deals is undisclosed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Music \u2014 the consumption of it, not the live aspect of it \u2014 is virtually recession-proof. Consumers have proven that their music listening habits are not affected by economic downturns in the same way that other industries are. Industry business analysts are calling for double-digit growth into the 2030s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMusic is an asset class that\u2019s hiding in plain sight and hasn\u2019t been unlocked,\u201d said David Umeh, founder and chief executive of Clouty said in an interview with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a8cf1934-22d0-490f-ab89-bfd149ed15b7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it just us, or did it get a little cold in here?<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canadian pop idol Justin Bieber has joined hundreds of other artists in selling their life&#8217;s work to the highest bidder.
