O\u2019Brien was the first full-time female member of the New York Philharmonic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beat on the ground:<\/strong> This year\u2019s Oscar-nominated documentaries includes prime-time Emmy Award winner Molly O\u2019Brien\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/archives.nyphil.org\/goldner\">The Only Girl in the Orchestra<\/a>. O\u2019Brien\u2019s documentary features her aunt, the double bassist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlygirlintheorchestra.com\/about\">Orin O\u2019Brien<\/a>. In 1966, O\u2019Brien became the New York Philharmonic\u2019s first full-time female player. She played with the New York Philharmonic until her retirement in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The backstory:<\/strong> The 89-year-old double bassist Orin O\u2019Brien was born in Hollywood, California in 1935. She studied at the Juilliard School and played with the New York City Ballet beginning in 1956, before she joined the New York Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein\u2019s tenure in 1966. Bernstein <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/artists\/new-york-philharmonic\/orin-obrien-first-woman-orchestra-interview\/\">may also have played a part<\/a> in hiring her as the orchestra\u2019s first full-time female member.<\/p>\n<p>While O\u2019Brien may have been the only woman in the orchestra during her time, she was not the orchestra\u2019s first female member. In 1922, <a href=\"https:\/\/archives.nyphil.org\/goldner\">Harpist Stephanie &#8220;Steffy&#8221; Goldner<\/a> (1896-1962) became the New York Philharmonic\u2019s first woman musician.
