The proposed closure has been called a devastating blow to music in Wales and the UK.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s going on:<\/strong> In late January, the University of Cardiff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2025\/jan\/28\/cardiff-university-cut-staff-drop-subjects-including-nursing-and-music\">announced its plans<\/a> to cut 400 academic jobs as well as its music, nursing, and modern language programs in order to avoid financial ruin. The University cited plummeting international student enrollments as one cause of its recent deficits. Widespread condemnation has followed the University\u2019s decision, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/save-cardiff-university-school-of-music\">petitions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/\">letters in The Times<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/mass-demonstration-scheduled-in-protest-of-proposed-axing-of-cardiff-universitys-school-of-music\/\">a large demonstration<\/a> on February 22nd. The opera star Kiri Te Kanawa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/education\/opera-legend-dame-kiri-te-31009973\">recently joined the list of musical luminaries<\/a> speaking out against the school\u2019s closure, which also includes Sir Simon Rattle and many prominent Welsh and British musicians.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The implications:<\/strong> In a recent Opinion piece in The Times Higher Education, Ian Pace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/opinion\/cardiffs-music-closure-will-hasten-fading-out-uk-musical-scholarship\">argued<\/a> that closing Cardiff\u2019s School of Music forebodes the end of musical scholarship in the UK. Pace notes that in recent years, the University of Cardiff has been home to the UK\u2019s leading scholars on Liszt, Jan\u00e1\u010dek, and Stravinsky, and some of the world\u2019s greatest scholars on historical performance, French music, popular music, and Turkish and Yoruba musical traditions.<\/p>\n<p>When faced with budget cuts, the University of Cardiff has chosen to prioritize practical departments rather than more scholarly-based departments, like its School of Music.
