The Zells\u2019 gift is one of nearly 200 donations made to the symphony\u2019s SEMPRE ALWAYS capital campaign.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the buzz:<\/strong> On Tuesday, December 10th, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association (CSOA) <a href=\"https:\/\/cso.org\/media\/mz5fqlns\/news-release_csoa-receives-transformational-gift-from-zell-family-foundation.pdf\">announced<\/a> that the Zell Family Foundation had gifted the association 50 million dollars. The Zell family\u2019s gift is one of 200 made to the symphony\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cso.org\/support\/make-a-gift\/sempre-always-campaign\/\">SEMPRE ALWAYS<\/a> campaign, which has now raised $215 million for the CSOA. <a href=\"https:\/\/cso.org\/experience\/article\/21308\/the-zell-family-foundation-gives-50-million-t\">The campaign supports the CSOA\u2019s strategic goals<\/a>, which include debt reduction, increasing the organization\u2019s endowment, funding musician and staff benefits, touring projects, as well as various digital and artistic initiatives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Behind the scenes:<\/strong> Helen Zell, chairman of the Zell Family Foundation, is an avid member of the CSOA community. She chaired the search committee that in April <a href=\"https:\/\/cso.org\/media\/llib5040\/csoa-news-release_cso-names-klaus-m%C3%A4kel%C3%A4-next-music-director.pdf\">named Klaus M\u00e4kel\u00e4 as the CSO\u2019s 11th music director<\/a>. Zell also served as the CSOA board\u2019s first female chair, holding the position for two consecutive terms.<\/p>\n<p>The Zell Family Foundation was established by Helen Zell\u2019s husband, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/sam-zell\/\">Sam Zell<\/a>\u2014a billionaire entrepreneur, real estate magnate, philanthropist, and former owner of the Chicago Tribune\u2014who died in 2023.
