The opera tells the story of Alma Mahler-Werfel, composer and muse to fin-de-si\u00e8cle Vienna\u2019s greatest artists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Driving the news:<\/strong> On Saturday, October 26th, Israeli composer Ella Milch-Sheriff\u2019s opera Alma premiered at the Vienna Volksoper. With a libretto by Ido Ricklin, the opera Alma Mahler-Werfel (n\u00e9e Schindler)\u2014the composer, muse, and wife to Gustav Mahler, Walter Gropius, and Franz Werfel\u2014and her experiences as a mother. It stars soprano <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arsis-artists.com\/en\/artists\/annette-dasch\">Annette Dasch<\/a> in the title role.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A bit of context:<\/strong> Alma Mahler-Werfel (1879-1964) has been the subject of countless <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/40093916-die-muse-von-wien\">novels<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=_-uADwAAQBAJ&amp;dq=alma+mahler+biography&amp;hl=en&amp;newbks=1&amp;newbks_redir=1&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwihk6DQ16qJAxX3FFkFHdt0LvcQ6AF6BAgKEAI\">biographies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0212827\/\">films<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/images.app.goo.gl\/85X4aMg84zdWhfQP9\">paintings<\/a>. However, this opera is the first to centre the complicated historic figure. Mahler-Werfel is notorious for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2010\/dec\/02\/alma-schindler-problem-gustav-mahler\">her antisemitism<\/a> (despite marrying and having relationships with various Jews) as well as her decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/24\/arts\/music\/circe-and-muse-no-longer-a-new-opera-reconsiders-alma-mahler.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&amp;referringSource=articleShare\">doctor letters<\/a> from her husband Gustav before publishing them.
