Gandelsman is one of 22 fellows awarded the prestigious grant this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the buzz:<\/strong> This week, the MacArthur Foundation announced its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macfound.org\/programs\/awards\/fellows\/results?fellow_class=2024&amp;include_deceased=Include&amp;radio=0\">Class of 2024 Fellows<\/a>. Amongst an impressive list including poets, sociologists, filmmakers, biologists, activists, and astronomers, violinist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/johnnyg2703\/\">Johnny Gandelsman<\/a> was this year\u2019s sole musician. Gandelsman is also a composer and producer known for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.macfound.org\/fellows\/class-of-2024\/johnny-gandelsman\">reimagining classical works and nurturing the creation of new music across styles and genres<\/a>.\u201d The grant includes an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestrad.com\/news\/violinist-johnny-gandelsman-awarded-800000-macarthur-fellowship\/18691.article\">$800,000 USD fellowship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A little bit more:<\/strong> Johnny Gandelsman was born in Moscow in 1978 to a family of musicians. He attended the Curtis Institute of Music and is a former member of Yo-Yo Ma\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silkroad.org\/\">Silkroad Ensemble<\/a> (2002-2020). Gandelsman notably reenvisions classical music through non-Western and folk lenses. His recordings of Bach\u2019s Cello Suites and Violin Sonatas and Partitas drew inspiration from folk bowings and fiddling techniques.
