Gardiner is alleged to have punched the bass William Thomas while backstage during a performance of Les Troyens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The update:<\/strong> This week, the conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner <a href=\"https:\/\/slippedisc.com\/2024\/07\/sir-john-eliot-gardiners-exit-statement\/\">announced<\/a> that he will not return as leader and artistic director of the\u00a0 Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra. Gardiner\u2019s departure follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2023\/aug\/24\/john-eliot-gardiner-pulls-out-of-bbc-proms-after-reports-he-punched-bass-singer\">allegations<\/a> that he hit the singer William Thomas while backstage during a performance of Les Troyens. Thomas reportedly exited to the wrong side of the stage, inciting a violent temper tantrum from the illustrious conductor. Gardiner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/article\/2024\/jul\/24\/john-eliot-gardiner-monteverdi-choir-and-orchestras\">claims to have undergone extensive therapy and counseling<\/a> since the incident eleven months ago. The conductor has also withdrawn from performances at the BBC Proms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Catch-up:<\/strong> The 81-year-old conductor John Eliot Gardiner founded the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra (MCO) in 1964. Following his incident with William Thomas, the MCO considered the possibility of a rehabilitation process as Gardiner received treatment for anger management. However, negotiations between Gardiner and the board reportedly became turbulent, <a href=\"https:\/\/slippedisc.com\/2024\/07\/exclusive-john-eliot-gardiner-is-sacked-by-his-orchestras\/\">causing the board to lose patience<\/a> in Gardiner.
