Salonen announced his departure from their orchestra earlier this season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Driving the news:<\/strong> Before Esa-Pekka Salonen\u2019s final series of concerts with the San Francisco Symphony, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/article\/esa-pekka-salonen-sf-symphony-sheku-kanneh-mason-19507925.php\">members of the orchestra protested<\/a> outside the hall. Handing out informative leaflets and stickers, they expressed their disappointment with the symphony\u2019s board of directors. The fliers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/24\/arts\/music\/san-francisco-symphony-esa-pekka-salonen.html\">accused the orchestra\u2019s administration<\/a> of lacking artistic vision, and cries of dismay were also heard from the concert hall\u2019s balcony before the performance began.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A refresher:<\/strong> Esa-Pekka Salonen, the SFS\u2019s musical director since 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/14\/arts\/music\/esa-pekka-salonen-leaving-san-francisco-symphony.html\">announced his departure<\/a> from the organization earlier this year. Salonen cited discord with the orchestra\u2019s board of directors, who had recently announced a series of budget cuts. The board\u2019s efforts to cut costs had led to cancelled tours, cancelled commissions, and a reduced number of concerts.<\/p>\n<p>Editorials in the San Francisco Standard have recently described the SFS as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/opinion\/2024\/06\/20\/san-francisco-symphony-troubled\/\">setting itself on fire<\/a>.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/songofthelarkblog.com\/2024\/06\/22\/so-the-san-francisco-symphony-is-on-fire\/\">Others have succinctly put it<\/a> that the SFS is currently suffering from problems in leadership, communications, values, and respect.
