And apparently, those working alongside Rannila have known of his behaviour <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hs.fi\/taide\/art-2000010477685.html\">for years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Playing catch-up:<\/strong> The 35-year-old conductor Jonas Rannila is well-known in Finland\u2019s musical communities. Recently appointed as chief conductor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sinfonietta.pori.fi\/\">Pori Sinfonietta<\/a>, Rannila has conducted over 30 operas with the <a href=\"https:\/\/oopperabaletti.fi\/en\/\">Finnish National Opera<\/a>. He also works at the Sibelius Academy, is music director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.operabox.net\/english\">Opera Box<\/a>, and artistic director of both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helsinginfilharmoninenkuoro.fi\/\">Helsinki Philharmonic Choir<\/a> and the Finnish Oratorio Choir.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, what\u2019s the deal?:<\/strong> In May 2024, the Finnish investigative blog Long Play published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longplay.fi\/pitkat\/muusikon-paradoksi\">an article<\/a> about a classical musician who used his professional clout to coerce younger musicians into performing unwanted sexual acts. Long Play separately interviewed 11 young musicians for their article. Soon after the article\u2019s publication, the conductor Jonas Rannila <a href=\"https:\/\/theviolinchannel.com\/finnish-national-opera-terminates-conductors-contract-due-to-misconduct-allegations\/\">announced on his social media<\/a> that the piece described himself.The authors of the Long Play article, Karoliina Paananen and Sonja Saarikoski, expressed that they didn\u2019t write the article to accuse the subject of a crime. Rather, their piece highlights the long-established tolerance of coercion and abuse within the classical music industry. Rannila has since been removed from his responsibilities at the Sibelius Academy.
