The orchestra plays instruments<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2024\/02\/14\/violins-made-from-battered-migrant-boats-feature-at-milans-la-scala-theatre\"> crafted from the remains of migrants\u2019 boats<\/a> by inmates at Milan\u2019s opera prison. The Metamorphosis project symbolizes rebirth and rehabilitation for Milan\u2019s prisoners, and honours migrants\u2019 brave attempts to start a new life.<\/p>\n<p>Catch-up: The United Nations reports that since 2014, over 20,000 migrants have died or disappeared while crossing the Mediterranean sea in an <a href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2023\/sc15427.doc.htm#:~:text=PEACE%20AND%20SECURITY-,RUVEN%20MENIKDIWELA%2C%20Director%20of%20the%20New%20York%20Office%20of%20the,per%20cent%20compared%20to%202022.\">ongoing crisis<\/a>. Prisoners at Milan\u2019s opera prison work for around five hours a day as luthiers, carefully crafting pieces of wood from migrants\u2019 dilapidated boats into world-class instruments under expert instruction. The instruments take around 400 hours to make.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line: Many prisoners have reported a renewed sense of purpose in their new vocation, as well as a wish to be rehabilitated like the materials with which they work.
